Constitutional reform: Reps seeks international collaboration

By Mercy Aikoye

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has embarked on a mission to seek international collaboration and technical assistance to bolster the ongoing constitutional review exercise. This initiative is designed to tap into global expertise and best practices, thereby informing Nigeria’s constitutional reform process.

At a recent Diplomatic Dinner themed “Constitution, Dialogue, and National Renewal” held at the National Assembly Library in Abuja, Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy.

“Through parliamentary diplomacy, we can foster global collaboration, advance democratic principles, build bridges of understanding, and share expertise in governance and lawmaking,” he noted.

Kalu emphasized that the committee recognizes the value of international partnerships, knowledge exchange, and collaborative learning in navigating the complex process of constitutional reform. “The task of constitutional reform is not one we undertake in isolation. As we navigate this complex process, we recognize the immense value of international partnerships, knowledge exchange, and collaborative learning,” he added.

The lawmakers hope to benefit from exposure to diverse constitutional models and legislative practices, gain valuable insights into alternative governance structures, and strengthen their engagement with parliamentary bodies in other countries. This, they believe, will enrich the constitutional review process and contribute to the development of a more robust and effective constitution.

To achieve its objectives, the committee is seeking support and partnership in several key areas, including study tours and legislative exchange, technical resources and expertise, and inter-parliamentary cooperation. “We seek your support and partnership in several key areas: Study Tours and Legislative Exchange; Technical Resources and Expertise and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation,” Kalu said.

The Diplomatic Dinner provided a platform for the committee to explore avenues for meaningful collaboration with the international community. By engaging with foreign partners, the lawmakers aim to draw on global expertise and best practices to inform Nigeria’s constitutional reform process.

The outcome of this initiative is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s democratic development. By leveraging international cooperation and international expertise, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review hopes to produce a more inclusive, effective, and sustainable constitution that reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
