A devastating flood disaster has struck Mokwa, Niger State, claiming hundreds of lives and destroying properties worth millions. Senator Peter Ndalikali Jiya, representing Niger South Senatorial District, has moved a motion at the Senate, highlighting the need for immediate government intervention, and begging those that made donation to that effect to keep their promises.
While addressing journalists shortly after plenary on Tuesday, he described the flood, which occurred on May 29th and 30th, as unprecedented, with waters uprooting houses, smashing cars, and damaging infrastructure, including a nearby railway. According to him, about 300 bodies have been recovered so far, with many more still missing. The area, he went on is densely populated, with four Islamic schools, and the flood has left many residents displaced.
Senator Jiya commended the federal government, the Vice President, and the state government for their efforts and pledges to help the affected people. However, he urged the government to fully implement the pledges made to alleviate the sufferings of the people, noting that entire families have been swept away.
The Senator emphasized the need for rehabilitation of the affected areas and the rehabilitation of homes, shops, and worship centers. He also called on well-meaning individuals and philanthropists to come to the aid of the victims to help them recover and rebuild their lives.
The Senator thanked UN agencies for their efforts in caring for the displaced people and mentioned a discussion with a UN official about storing relief items. He highlighted the ongoing efforts of UN agencies and the need for continued support from the international community.
The motion has solicited further assistance from relevant authorities, and Senator Jiya reiterated the importance of the motion in recognizing the catastrophic flood and drawing attention to the government’s responsibility to build and maintain infrastructure.
