Nigerian Immigration officer shoots Nigerien national at Baure border, victim dies

A Nigerien national has died following a shooting incident at the Burdugu Border entry checkpoint in Baure Local Government Area, Katsina State, near the Niger Republic border.

According to sources, the incident occurred on Feb. 3, 2026, at about 1100hrs, when Inspector Tijjani Mai Kaho of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) attempted to stop a motorcycle rider identified as Dari Bace Bace, 30, of Bace Bace village, Niger Republic, who failed to stop for routine border checks.

The officer reportedly fired at the motorcyclist, causing serious head injuries. The victim was initially rushed to the General Hospital, Baure, and later referred to the Federal Medical Center, Daura, where he died while receiving treatment.

The suspect, Inspector Mai Kaho, is currently at large, while the Katsina State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the matter.

The sources said the scene was secured and preserved immediately upon receipt of the report, and further updates on the investigation will be communicated.
