The Federal Government (FG) has launched the “Mobile Teams MT Nigeria Project”, a high-tech border patrol initiative aimed at curbing irregular migration and transnational crimes. The project was inaugurated on Tuesday with the establishment of the Project Steering Committee at the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Abuja.

The initiative is backed by the Migration Partnership Programme of the Netherlands and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). It aims to transform border patrol into a rapid-response operation capable of monitoring the nation’s vast and porous frontiers.

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (CGIS), Kemi Nanna Nandap, emphasized that traditional policing is no longer sufficient to address the country’s border security challenges. Nigeria shares over 4,000 kilometres of land borders and an 853-kilometre coastline, making it vulnerable to transnational crimes.

The “Mobile Teams” are designed to be flexible, elite units equipped with modern technology to penetrate high-risk and difficult terrains. The project is expected to enhance the country’s border security and curb irregular migration, with the support of international partners.
