Abuja Council Poll: ADC blames coalition rift for defeat

The Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has attributed the party’s disappointing outing in the 2026 Abuja Area Council elections to what it described as breaches of due process by certain coalition partners.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, National Chairman of the party, Hon. Gombe, lamented that some actors within the alliance failed to adhere to the party’s constitutional guidelines, a development he said undermined the party’s chances at the polls.

He also took the opportunity to dissociate the recognized leadership of the ADC from an international press conference recently organised by individuals he referred to as “so-called opposition elements” claiming to represent party interests.

Gombe said: “The Authentic National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress distances itself entirely from the international press conference held by these factions. They do not speak for our party.”

The chairman faulted the splinter group for alleging that the National Assembly had exceeded its authority in matters relating to the constitutional framework for the 2027 Electoral Act, insisting that lawmakers were acting within their mandate.

“The National Assembly is empowered by the constitution to establish the Electoral Act. Accusing them of performing their duty is misguided. Rather than attacking the legislature, our coalition partners should focus on normalizing and formalizing their relationship with our great party,” Gombe added.

He further contended that the international community has paid little attention to the concerns raised by the dissenting bloc, attributing this to what he described as undemocratic conduct and internal wrangling.

Making a closing appeal, Gombe urged committed members and coalition allies who he said are not driven by personal ambition to return to ADC ward offices nationwide to formally register and strengthen the party’s grassroots base.

He added, “Your power mongering and refusal to reconcile aspirations for the betterment of the country are the main reasons the international community ignores your appeals. Politics should be about service, not self-aggrandizement.

“We urge you to come back home. Help us rebuild and salvage this nation from the grassroots. The Authentic ADC remains the vehicle for true change in Nigeria.”
