A chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Jerry Obasi has called on the Governors of the South-East to embark on measures that would alleviate the present conditions of citizens from the zone, amidst the lock down over the Coronavirus pandemic
Obasi, a former deputy national chairman of APGA in a statement he issued from Abakiliki, Ebonyi state, regretted that the measures taken by law enforcement agencies in the zone to ensure total compliance to the lock down has caused more harm to the people than what it is aimed at actualize, adding that the Governors must used the opportunity to show concerns and drive the much needed democracy dividends to the people
“The scourge of covid-19 is biting hard on the citizens of the country especially that of the South-East geo-political zone.
“Before dishing out the compulsory stay at home orders meted out by the Governors of the South-East zone.certain realities must be appreciated and brought into bear.
“Most Nigerians are hustlers who live by daily income and as a result may find it difficult if not impossible to cope with certain extremities such as a mandatory stay at home without any form of palliative.
“In days ahead the menace of hunger, starvation and hopelessness would deal a heavy blow on the fight against the pandemic called Corona virus. The consequence is that hungry and angry frustrated citizens may be forced to seek survival at all cost thereby disobeying the self isolation order to help themselves.
“There are instances where such sit at home orders are beginning to be defiled and disobeyed resulting in the army and police maiming, shooting and killing innocent defenceless and vulnerable citizens. Even without any prohibitions or restrictions citizens are living from hand to mouth and what about a situation where by there are hinderances.in Ebonyi state the coordinator of Mbeke Development Center was caught in a video that went viral flogging his constituent who are mostly very aged women who are illiterates and have no any alternate means of survival other than coming out to village nodal markets to purchase food stuffs”
While insisting that South East governors must do more to protect their citizens the former deputy governorship candidate of APGA in Ebonyi state noted, “only the governor of Abia state has today talked about assisting her people. Enugu state government only fumigated the marketplace and promised to do more
“Ebonyi has also tried her best in liberalising the sit at home orders by creating an alternate motorpark with serious checks but more needs to be done by the Governors of South East as danger looms ahead of nothing is urgently done.
“The South East Governors should request their fair share from the Covid-19 donations whose major donors are Igbos. Something urgently needs to be done.let us stop playing politics with human lives, the lives of our people”
