The lingering case of who occupies the seat for Imo Norh North senatorial district was finally laid to rest last Friday, as Senator -elect Chukwuma Frank Ibezim, was issued with his Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a declaration by the Supreme Court
An elated Ibezim, who spoke to journalists at a pre-inauguration dinner held in his honour at the Rockview Royale Hotel Abuja, assured his Okigwe senatorial district of an impactful representation, even as he regretted that district has lost almost three years during which it has no voice in the upper legislative chamber, and must now do ‘catch- up” if the yawning gap in development in the area has to be reduced.
He said: “Truly speaking Okigwe people have not had representation in the Senate for up to three years between the 8th and the 9th Senate. That is a terrible thing to happen to a people. So today God has made it possible for us to inch in to the Red chamber, so Okigwe people are inching in because I am inching in. We thank God for a day like this .
“And we’re praying that the days of the cankerworm shall be replenished because we’ve lost time. We need development and one way, one good way is to have a voice in the red chambers.
“God promised us that we are going to the Senate because we are going to bring development to the people, so we watched, sometimes we felt like doubting but he kept on assuring us. Here we are, today is a great day of joy and we just have to rejoice in it. I’m happy, I thank God, you can see that my people are very happy.”
Ibezim, afar a lingering legal battle, will now occupy the Imo North senatorial district seat, which was earlier declared vacant and a bye election conducted by INEC following the death of Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu, who died last year
