Global Peace Movement International UK has expressed delight over the recent re-organisation in the Nigeria Police Force.
The anti curruption crusader, described the measure as “a step in the right direction”.
This is contained in a statement issued by the group’s President General, Dr Mike Uyi, in London on Thursday.
It commended the Acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, for his “foresight” especially in his recent appointments and silent reorganisation going on in the force.
Uyi said that Baba’s appointment could not have come at a better time, considering the rising cases of insecurity in the country.
“We are sincerely applaud the IGP for his foresight in recent appointments, those he has appointed are tested and experienced hand to man the affairs of the different zones Zone”.
“With the steps so far taken by the IGP to reorganise the security architecture of the country, we are confident that the present security challenges will soon be a thing of the past,” he said.
Uyi hoped that those appointed will bring their experiences and track records to bear in thier handling of security challenges in the country.
“If familiarity makes the work of fixing insecurity easier, then we are not far from achieving our desired goals of having sustainable peace and security in the country.
On security, Dr. Uyi described the deadly attacks on security agents and destruction of life and property in the South-East as unfortunate, that it has compounded the security challenges in the region.
He said the sense of insecurity in the region is so strong that people now lived in fear, crippling all economic activities in the region.
“We at Global Peace Movement International are saddened by the fact that blood is being spilled all over the country. As a group, we are appalled that people cannot go about our businesses without fear of being killed, raped, or kidnapped.
“We are unhappy because children cannot go to school feeling safe and protected by adults and the governments.
“We appeal to the governors of the South Eastern region to step up beyond the establishment of Ebube-Agu and other security outfits to dialogue with all those that can make peace return to our region”.
On the shoot on sight order by the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, to officers Uyi said it was not targeted at innocent and lawful citizens in the South East.
“The IGP gave the order to police personnel to take the war against crime to criminals and raid their dens. The order was a deliberate effort by the Police High Command to stabilise the security order in the South East”
“IGP Alkali is deeply concerned about the recent spike of crime in the zone, most especially, deliberate attacks on security agents and national assets.
According to Uyi, the order is targeted to restore peace, law and order. Global Peace Movement International therefore, urge Anambra residents to work with the Police and other security agents so that peace can return to the zone again.
“Global Peace Movement International is set to meet with all the governors of South Eastern Nigeria and other stakeholders to discuss how to end the security issues in the region”.
“We have track records on peaceful negotiations in some countries of the world like Iraq and Yoghuslavia among other countries. Once we get an official invitation from the governors of the South East, we shall deploy all our arsenals of peaceful negotiations and we are sure peace will return to the whole south east”, he said.
“We are a responsible organization that is respected by world leaders and with our huge experience in peaceful negotiations, we know that peace in south east and the whole country is not a thing of impossibility”
“We are appealing to the south east governors to join hands with the Inspector General of Nigerian Police to ensure peace returns to our dear county”.
