Trabzonspor midfielder, John Obi Mikel has called for the Turkish Super Lig to be suspended due to the threat of the coronavirus and he has been backed by Galatasaray striker Radamel Falcao.
Unlike most European Leagues including the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Eredivisie, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, all matches in Turkey will be played behind closed doors until the end of April.
Writing on Instagram, Mikel said : ” There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and don’t want to play football in this situation.
“Everyone should be home with their families and loved ones in this critical time. Season should be cancelled as the world is facing such turbulent times.”
Falcao, who played alongside Mikel at Chelsea during the 2015-2016 season, commented under the midfielder’s post : “you are right, John. Life is more important than football”.
Despite the concerns raised by the two marque players, the Super Lig is still running and Mikel’s Trabzonspor are due to face Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday, while Falcao’s Galatasaray tackle Besiktas in an Istanbul derby.
