Kano state Executive Council has approved the constitution of a committee to design a holistic sports policy for the state in order to help the state meet its aspirations in the sector and reclaim its top position in sports in the country.
The Committee, which is under the chairmanship of the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, would also work towards ensuring a harmonious working relation between the state Ministry of Sports, state Sports Commission and the Office of the Special Adviser on Sports.
The state Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, said in a statement that, “other terms of reference for the committee include: to prioritize the content and direction of sports in the state; reinvigorate the state sports academy, Karfi in Garun Malam local government as well as search for ways of making sports a viable Internally Generated Revenue earner.”
He said the Committee has also been charged with the responsibility to assist in designing a strategy for private sector funding for sports in the state, despite the budgetary allocation for sport.
Malam Garba pointed out that the committee would also work with the state ministry of education in identifying talented youth would be groomed for better prospects in the sporting arena within and outside the country.
The Committee has the Commissioner for Information; Commissioner for Youth and Sports; chairman, Sports Commission; Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports; and the chairman, Kano Pillars Football Club as members.
