New COAS assumes office, visit CDS

Major General Faruk Yahaya, on Friday assumed office at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, as the 22nd Chief of Army Staff.

The new Army boss on arrival at the Defence complex visited the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor in his office at the DHQ.


The CDS congratulated Maj Gen Yahaya on his appointment and urged him to build on the legacy of his predecessor, particularly in the fight against insurgency and banditry.


The COAS was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Policy and Plans Headquarters Nigerian Army, Maj Gen Benjamin Ahanotu.
Highlight of the visit was the CDS’ presentation of Nigerian Army flag to the new COAS.


The COAS later moved to the Army Headquarters where he went into a closed session with the senior officers.
A one minute silence was observed for his predecessor and other late officers.


Major General Faruk Yahaya, prior to his appointment, was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and was also the Theatre Commander of the military outfit in the North-East codenamed Operation Hadin Kai. He was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday following the death of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru along with 10 military officers in the air crash in Kaduna last week Friday.
