Suspension of IPOB sit at home order: Nnewi experience lockdown again

Inspite of the suspension of the ghost town order by the Indigineuos People of Biafra (IPOB) commercial activities were on Monday paralyzed in Nnewi and environs.
Markets, offices, banks were not open for business and there were no vehicular movement as people stay off the street.
Some of the major streets were converted to football field by youths.
Respondents who spoke with our correspondent on the grounds of anonymity identified fear factor as the reason for why people voluntarily decided to sit at home.
A trader said that it was risky for him or any other person to go to the market after what happened last Monday.
He said that he was aware of the suspension of the ghost town order by the leadership of IPOB but added quickly that the people who are enforcing the order might not have read about the new directive.
A legal practitioner whose chamber is located at the roundabout area of the industrial town of Nnewi also said that the situation was so tense last week Monday and that his chamber was actually attacked.
He said that as such cannot afford to risk his life today by going out.
Our correspondent observed that there was actually no form of harassment or intimidation on the few pedestrians seen walking on the streets.
A statement credited to the IPOB’s spokesperson, Mr Emma Powerful had on Friday last week restricted the ghost town order to only the days that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is currently in DSS detention would appear in court.
