The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has warned some residents who try to interfer in rescue operations by officials of the agency to steer clear.
Director General of FEMA, Abbas Idriss called for the prosecution of persons who interfere or hamper emergency rescue operations, to act as a deterrent to others. He disclosed this at a seminar on Emergency care and evacuation leading the way in Evacuation Standard First Aid,CPR and AED in Abuja, recently.
Idriss explained that most times members of the public move into a disaster scene trying to take pictures with their phones and in the process hamper rescue operations.
The DG emphasized the importance of continuous enlightenment and education on the activities of emergency responders.
On the deployment of technology in emergency evacuation plans, Idriss said, “we have already started deploying technology. You cannot fight disaster without technology. The 112 toll free line is working, even if you don’t have a SIM card in your phone, you can still get across”
In a statement issued by the agency’s head of Public Relations unit, Nkechi Isa, said the D.G appealed to the media to publicize the 112 toll free line.
