2021 Int’l Human Rights Day: NHRC organizes quiz competition for schools

As part of activities lined up for the celebration of international human rights day for the year, 2021, the National Human Rights Commission, Wednesday, organized a quiz competition for secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In her opening remarks at the event, the chairperson, governing council of the commission, Dr Salamatu Husseini Suleiman explained that the quiz competition ”kick starts the celebration of the international human rights day 2021 by the national human rights commission”.

She further informed that the rights day is celebrated globally on everything 10th December to commemorate the adoption of the universal declaration of human rights by the United National General Assembly on 10th December,1948.

She emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights and its enforcement hence the need for all persons to have a good knowledge of human rights which informed the concept of Human Rights Education.

” The Human Rights Commission as the agency charged with the mandate to promote, protect and enforce human rights has adopted Human Rights Education as a tool and as a lifeline process that builds knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors to promote and uphold human rights”, she said.

The chairperson further explained that it is hoped that by so doing, a universal culture of recognizing human rights will be entrenched through knowledge-sharing, imparting of skills and molding of attitudes in young learners and all persons. The quiz competition featured ten schools in the FCT.

After the first round, six schools qualified for the second round. At the end of the competition, Olumawo College emerged winner with African Child College as second. The third position went to Tulip International College. All the students that participated went home with consolation prizes.
