By Pwanagba Agabus, Jos

The Senator representing Plateau Northern zone, Istifanus Gyang has empowered 600 indigent students and 500 widows with cash from the zone.

The Lawmaker who is from the main opposition PDP said that the gesture aimed at cushioning the hardship being passed by the two groups.

Gyang while presenting the cash to the beneficiaries in Jos, maintained that the gesture was born out of his personal experience in life, particularly when he lost his father at a tender age, and later his mother.

He further explained that the gesture is to enable the two categories in his constituency to become self reliant and economically independent.

“Today we are giving 511 widows N20, 000 each to start up a petty trading and for those who are in it already to use it to enhance their businesses.

“The indigent students will have N10, 000 each to support their academic pursuit.

” This is a special kind of intervention; these two category of people are special considering what my mother went through as a widow and what I later went through as an orphan.

“It is not just any kind of intervention, but a product of my personal experience in life and so to me these two group of people deserve attention even more than what I have done, “he said

He called on the students to shun examination malpractice, cultist activities, drug abuse, thuggery and all forms of vices in order to contribute their quarter to the growth of the society.

The Senator promised to continue to initiate programmes that would provide succour to widows and orphans in his constiteuncy.

In his remarks, the chairman of PDP in the State, Hon. Chris Hassan, commended the lawmaker for reaching out to the downtrodden in the society, saying the party is proud of him.

Hassan who was represented at the occasion by the party’s Vice Chairman from the Zone, Hon. Davou Mang, said that the fact that the lawmaker is reaching out to his constituents including those not from his party, shows that PDP is for all.

Also, Speaking at the event, former Minister of Water Resources and Rural Development, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, commended Senator Gyang for the gesture.

According to her, the Senator’s gesture was a true reflection of the what the Bibles preaches.

Ochekpe urges the legislator to do more for the greater good of humanity.
