A group, Association of Flower Nursery and Landscaping Practitioners of Nigeria (AFNALPA), has begun a 10 million trees planting awareness campaign in the country.

The Association on Tuesday started the sensitization of members of the public with a road walk show and free distribution of flowers in the nation’s capital territory, Abuja.

Fielding questions from journalists during the well attended event, the president of the association, Mrs Mary Omoh, urged government at all levels and stakeholders to support the initiative that would be carried out in the 36 states and the FCT.

She said the sum of N1 billion is needed for the successful planting of the 10 million trees nationwide.

According to her, planting of trees will help in curbing climate change that could led to disaster.

Mrs Omoh called on members of the public to always intensify efforts in planting at least a tree in a year.

“We are out to celebrate life because planting a tree saves life, plant a tree, save a life. That is why we are sensitising members of the public on the need to plant a tree.

“We are going to plant ten million trees in the 36 states and the FCT, so the government should support the 10 million trees campaign. We want the government to support us by funding the programme, it is a campaign that will benefit people across the country.

“We need N1 billion to fund the 10 million trees planting campaign in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The country seems to be running short of plants, and if not well tackled it would increase the temperature of the country,” she said.
