Another call has gone out to the National Assembly to review the Biosafety Act to strengthen the regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms products in the country.

Stakeholders made the call at a one day forum on findings on BT Cowpea for farmers with the theme: “Nigerian farmers and GM crops” in Abuja.
The forum was organised by Health of Mother Earth Foundation HOMEF.

A researcher and scientist, Dr Casmir Ifeanyi said that findings indicated that no food or feeding safety study was done on the newly introduced BT Cowpea and called for due diligence by regulatory authorities to avert the heath risk associated with some GMO crops.

Dr Ifeanyi also emphasized the need for effective regulatory framework for proper regulation of chemicals.
On his part, an environmental rights activist and Director Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Mr Nnimmo Bassey who stressed the need for more enlightenment for farmers before the introduction of any GMO products urged the National Assembly to do the needful to protect farmers and the nation at large.

Mr Bassey noted that some of the genetically modified organisms crops are harmful to the soil and human health.

Also, a food Sovereignty Advocate, Mrs Mariann Bassey-Orovwuje while advocating for the adoption of agroecology as acceptable alternative for enhanced food safety and security advised authorities concerned to exercise caution with the introduction of Genetically Modified products.

She also explained that there had been recorded failure and refusal of GMO products in some countries.
