The two major political parties in Enugu state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress(APC), have produced their flag bearers for the 2023 governorship election in the state.
A former Commissioner for finance in the state, Barrister Peter Mbah scored a total of 790 valid votes cast by the delegates to emerge as the PDP candidate, in a very peaceful primaries conducted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium, on Wednesday, May 25, whereas Barr Uche Nnaji was returned unopposed as candidate of Enugu APC for the guber primaries
The AUTHORITY observed that eight out of the 17 aspirants who passed through the PDP screening exercise stepped down for Barr Peter Mbah, prior to the commencement of the voting exercise.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who is the only contestant outside Enugu East senatorial district, had earlier announced his withdrawal from the race, same as a former senator of Enugu East senatorial district, Senator Gil Nnaji.
Among the eight aspirants who stepped down for Peter Mbah were Barr Nwabueze Ugwu,Professor Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, Rev Nwoye, Beloved Dan Anime, a former SSG to Enugu state government, G.O.C.Ajah and Erastmus Anike.
In their respective speeches, they said their decision to step down for Barr Peter Mbah is in the best interest of the party and for continuous peace in Enugu state by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to continue to thrive in the state.
In his acceptance speech, Mbah promised to sustain the social peace enthroned in Enugu state by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. He equally expressed gratitude to Governor Ugwuanyi for his numerous developmental strides, promising to sustain the tempo.
He also thanked the governor of old Anambra state, Chief Jim Nwobodo, who witnessed the Enugu PDP primary election for the fatherly role he played which resulted to the peaceful primaries.
In a similar peaceful disposition, Barrister Uche Nnaji was affirmed as the APC flagbearer for the 2023 Enugu state governorship race, with an affirmation votes from about 1,070 delegates
