Anger in FCT as Labour Party unseats PDP, APC

By Daniel Tyokua

Barely one week after the opposition Labour Party (LP) won the lone Federal Capital Territory Senatorial seat and AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency during presidential and National Assembly elections, the natives are unhappy over the development.

They described the situation as a ‘robbery’ from those they said are not the original inhabitants.

In a statement issued recently by the Coordinator, Coalition of FCT Indigenes, Habakkuk Lukman , said the only seat the Abuja indigenes have at the National Assembly has been taken away from them by other Nigerians, through “election conspiracy”.

Lukman said in the past, the Abuja indigenes have supported other Nigerians in the territory to win elections, but frowned that their support and goodwill is not being reciprocated.

He  stated that the forum would direct all indigenous communities in the FCT to withdraw all support being enjoyed by other Nigerians, since they went ahead to conspire and vote against the only indigenous seat they have.

According to Lukman, “In the history of Nigeria, no state has accommodated other Nigerians more than we have done. We have treated them like part of us.

“However, they  have mobilized themselves to collect the only seat we are having at the National Assembly without considering our plight”.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recently, declared the candidate of Labour party (LP), Ireti Kingibe as winner of the Federal Capital Territory lone Senatorial seat.

She  defeated the incumbent, Senator Philip Aduda of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to emerge winner of the election.

Announcing the results, the Returning Officer for the FCT senatorial election, Prof. Sani Saka, said that Kingibe scored a total of 202,175 votes across the six area councils whose results were declared to emerge winner.

Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 100,544 votes, while Mr  Angulu  Dobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 78,905 votes.

While Chinedu Obika of the Labour Party won AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency after polling 201, 308 votes to defeat serving member, Micah Jiba who polled 58,809 votes, Abu Zarri Ribadu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 44, 808 votes as declared by the INEC returning officer, Prof. Uketor Moti.
