FG spends N41.6bn on broadband provision project

The federal government said it has spent the sum of N41.6 billion on provision of broadband  in public and private tertiary  institutions, airports and markets across the country.

The minister of Communications and Digital Economy,  Prof. Isa Pantami disclosed this in Abuja, yesterday during the 2nd phase of presentation of letters to the benefiting institutions.

He said the amount covered the one hundred and thirteen interventions carried out since inception of the project.

Pantami revealed that in the second phase of the exercise, 49 tertiary institutions, 20 airports and 6 markets in all the six geopolitical zones of the country are fully captured.

The minister said  80% success have been recorded in the first phase of the broadband infrastructure project executed so far.

“Our 2nd phase of broadband provision in public and private tertiary institutions and markets, 49 tertiary institutions, 20 airports and 6 markets.

“We have spent the some of N41.6 billion on the broadband connectivity infrastructure project so far, the money is generated from internal revenue, this covered the 113 interventions across the six geopolitical zones of the country”

Responding on behalf of the regulatory body,  the Executive Secretary National University Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed commended Pantami for his untiring efforts to make Universities enjoy internet connectivity.

Rasheed said the world is drive by the knowledge of a digital economy, which he pledged the Universities readiness to make proper use of the facilities.
