The Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris has distributed 129,000 bags of fertilisers worth N2.3 billion free to farmers across the state.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at Kardi town in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of the state, the Governor said the gesture was meant to bring succour to the farmers.
He said the gesture would go a long way in supporting farmers to boost productivity and enhance their livelihood.
“This is a period where farmers need government support. As I promised during electioneering campaign that I am going to assist the farmers, this is in fulfilment of such promise,” he said.
The governor commended the efforts of security agencies for their courage and diligence in fighting banditry in the state, this, he said, had paved way for farmers and villagers to return back to their farms and villages.
Idris warned all the 21 Local Government Chairmen and political office holders against any form of bias in discharging their responsibilities.
He assured that he would not condone illegality of any kind, as anybody found guilty of such would be severely dealt with, adding that he would not hesitate to relief such a person of his/her appointment and made him/her to face the wrath of the law.
In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the commodity to improve their yields, thereby enhance their living standard.
He equally admonished the beneficiaries to support the present administration’s policies and programmes, assuring that the new administration was determined to bring the desired changes in the state.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Sani Yeldu thanked the governor for supporting the farmers with fertilisers.
Giving the break down on the sharing formula, he said, the distribution would be divided into two categories, as 10 Local Government Areas would get 96,000 bags while the remaining 11 Local Lovernment would receive 60,000 bags.
According to him, a committee comprising security, traditional rulers as well as religious leaders had already been setup to ensure fair distribution of the commodity across the state.
