The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday confirmed the resignation of its National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, and postponed its earlier scheduled meetings of the national caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) to yet to be announced dates.
Deputy National Chairman (North) of the party, Abubakar Kyari, who is now the acting National Chairman, made the announcements to journalists after he chaired a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at the APC headquarters in Abuja.
He also confirmed the resignation of the party’s National Secretary Iyiola Omisore, and his subsequent replacement by the deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, in acting capacity.
He said: “The NWC wishes to inform you of the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
“It is now incumbent on me as the Deputy National Chairman (North)/and the Deputy National Secretary to assume their roles.”
Kyari at the press conference further announced that the national caucus meeting slated for Tuesday and NEC meeting scheduled for Wednesday “are hereby postponed until a new date is announced in near future”.
Responding to reporters questions, Kyari said that no allegations of misappropriation of party finances have been brought against Adamu and Omisore, as reported in some sections of the media.
He however, gave the assurance that “details of the resignation” would be available by the party at a later time.
The new party helmsman disclosed that the vacancies opened up by the resignations would be filled in due course according to party guidelines.
The former Chairman, Adamu, has been recently been in a silent battle with President Bola Tinubu and his close allies very control of the party.
Differences started as early as the party’s national convention and presidential primaries last year, when Adamu clearly hinted that Tinubu was not his choice of presidential candidate, by backing the former Senate President, Ahmad Lawal.
The face-off snowballed into Adamu’s rejection of the nominees of the President, Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker for positions of principal officers of the 10th National Assembly, saying that he was not aware of the development.
After these developments, Tinubu’s loyalists were said to have intensified their plot to remove Adamu.
Reports indicate this led to forcing Adamu to tender his resignation letter through the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, who doubles as Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum, and a close ally of Tinubu.
