The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has called on corps members to uphold the National Youth Service Corp scheme initiated by former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon in 1973.
Permanent secretary FCT Administration, Olusade Adesola gave the charge during the swearing in ceremony of the 2023 batch ‘B’ stream 1 corp members at Kubwa in Abuja,
He said NYSC was conceived to further unite the country, which the Corp members must not renege on the established spirit.
Adesola, who was represented at the event by Acting Secretary/Chairman of NYSC Governing Board, Mrs. Justina Pawa, urged the Corps members to be good ambassadors of the nation’s capital, Abuja.
He reminded them that, as they come from diverse ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds, the service offers them the rare opportunity to deepen their knowledge about the backgrounds, diverse cultures, food, and language of others, which tends to fortify peace and unity in the nation.
The permanent secretary assured them of adequate security during and even after their orientation exercise, as the FCT is on top of the security concerns of all the residents of the Territory including the corps members deployed to serve in the rural areas.
Adesola admonished Corps Members to be security conscious of their environment and report promptly to the Camp officials or nearby security personnel, if they notice any form of security threat or breach.
He commended the Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed as well as his team, for the timely mobilization and deployment of critical resources for a seamless take-off of orientation programmes in the FCT and the 36 States of the Federation.
Adesola appreciated the patriotism of the new FCT NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Winifred Shokpeka, and other camp officials in handling the entrants of the deployed Corps Members professionally.
