Ban on sit-at-home: Protest against Enugu state govt penalty on defaulters takes life.

One person was reportedly killed at Ogbete Main market Enugu yesterday, when some traders whose shops were sealed on the instruction of the state government for defying the ban on Monday sit- at home embarked on protest which eventually turned violent.

It was gathered there was a disagreement among the traders on whether the entire market should be closed down for every trader to join in the protest.
Another source have it that some of the traders whose shops were sealed took the law in their hands to forcefully re open their shops by themselves against government order that they must come for re certification with evidence of their current tax receipts and other documents. But the environment became rowdy as market officials and security agents resisted them from taking laws into their hands,but should comply to the state government directives. Unfortunately, withib the period of the over heated arguments a stray bullet hit a young man.

Attempts to talk with the chairman of Ogbete Main Market Association before filing this report proved abortive.

The Enugu state police command in a press statement released in the evening said normalcy has been returned in the market and urged every resident to go about their usual business.

The Enugu state Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO),Dan Ndukwe(ASP), said the CP Ahmed Ammani, the state police commissioner has ordered for full investigation into the ugly incident.

The Enugu state government has also condemned the ugly incident. A press statement signed by the Secretary to the state government(SSG),Professor Chidiebere Onyia said the state government received the report with sadness, calling for thorough investigation from the concerned authorities.
