Gov. Alia awards N6bn contract for roads in Makurdi Metropolis

The Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth I. Alia has commenced his developmental agenda in earnest with the award of contract and flag-off of construction of 16 roads in Makurdi metropolis.

At the flag-off for the 15.39 km roads in Makurdi Monday, Gov. Alia said, “the construction of roads, particularly within Makurdi town, is important as this begins the realization of my government’s commitment to improve infrastructural development in the State as a basis to laying the foundation of a New Benue to mark my 100 days in office”.

Reiterating his avowed commitment during the campaigns to better life of the people, the governor pointed out that, “this we are ready and are going to do because I have the will, and where there is a will, there is also a way. I will make maximum use of the available resources to the government for your benefit”.

The contracts for the network of roads across Makurdi include: Odeh-Ageh-John Feese Street (1.08km), Apur to Akumah Abanyam street, Othaniel Taangahar Street, Orkuma Aunda Street (810 meters), Lushe Street (580 meters), at the new GRA. The Augustinian Community Roads (1.13km), Adeke/ Achusa to Nigerian Navy Barracks Road (1.98km, Keghem Malu street (420 meters)

Others included, David Jebe Street (1.33km) Korinya City Guest House — Akpeme (450 meters) Tyagher Gbaa Street (640 meters), Victoria Aende Street (590 meters), Keke NAPEP Street 1.450 km) in Wurukum, while Ghandi hotel Street (1.43km), Federal Low-Cost Housing Road (1.1km) of Northbank areas of Makurdi. Eight Avenue (760meters), lorkyaa Ako street (extension) (700 meters) as well as Ikeja —Sokoto Street (730 meters) in the Walata area.

The construction of these roads, Gov. Alia pointed out, “mark the commencement to the realization of my campaign promises of providing quality infrastructure for our people. These roads will not only improve transportation within the city, but also create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth”. 

The governor implored the contractor, M/S Triacta Nigeria Limited to maintain high standard of professionalism in the construction of these roads, and to make sure, every aspect specified in the contractual agreement ought to be strictly followed, and that the projects are completed within the stipulated period.

“These roads when completed, will positively impact on the individual persons residing along them as well as our state capital. A good road network is the lifeline of any thriving city, and Makurdi is no exception. These well-designed roads, with their asphalt surfaces, concrete drainages, and

culverts, will not only improve access, and transport within the city but also boost economic activities and enhance the overall quality of life for our citizens”.

“Benue State is the food basket of the Nation. The state thus plays a leading role in ensuring food security for the nation. The tireless work by our farmers to produce grains, fruits and

crops that sustain households across Nigeria need to be complemented to enable this agricultural abundance to reach the markets and homes. We therefore need an efficient and reliable network of roads that would stimulate commerce, and open up new opportunities for businesses to thrive”, Gov. Alia pointed out.

Gov. Alia said, his commitment to infrastructural development throughout the lifespan of his administration will remain steadfast. Pointing out that his administration recognises that robust and sustainable infrastructure is the bedrock of development. 

Earlier, Chairman, Technical Committee on Infrastructure, Planning and Implementation Engr. (Prof) Gabriel Akpen told newsmen that the roads will cost the state 6 billion naira. He assured that the quality of the roads will not be compromised, that it will be according to specifications and completed within 11 months.
