The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has admonished lawyers to always remember that they have the responsibility to uphold the rule of law.
Kalu admonished every lawyers in the country to “remember our roots”.
He spoke when his classmates, the class of 98 of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Cross River State, paid him a courtesy visit at the National Assembly, Abuja.
According to him, “we should not allow our new heights to deny us the opportunity of being mates. Whether I become a governor tomorrow or a president, you will still be my mates”.
His guests included the chairman of the NBA, Calabar Branch, Barr. Nsikka Ikpeme; Barr. Onyete Efenji Olelewe; former Abia State Commissioner for Youths, Barr. Charles Ezeonu; Sole Administrator, Ihitte Uboma Local Government Council, Imo State, Barr. Uche Okonkwo, Barr. Patrick Kazie Nwachukwu; the chairman, NBA, Ogoja branch, among others, who all represented Kalu’s class ’98;
Kalu reminded them not to forget to be humble even as opportunity of leadership is bestowed on them, saying, “we ‘ve responsibility to uphold principles of justice and of the rule of law as lawyers.”
Kalu admonished his professional colleagues that in their various positions, they are being looked upon as the temple of justice, insisting that, “we are beacons of hope and guardians of the constitution.”
He spoke during the visit on the sideline of the on-going National Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association ( NBA) in Abuja.
The Deputy Speaker who recalled their days in the school with nostalgia, added that the university prepared them for the present tasks.
He enjoined his mates to remain true and worthy ambassadors of the Institution.
