The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has warned stakeholders involved in the distribution of palliatives to indigent persons in communities not to divert the food items.
He gave the warning at the continuation of palliatives distribution on Tuesday in Bwari Area Council secretariat.
Wike who was represented by the mandate Secretary, Social Development Secretariat (SDS) Ibrahim Aminu, said the palliatives plan was initiated by the federal government to cushion the fuel subsidy removal hardship on the less privileged, and should not be frustrated by anyone.
He said: “This initiative is an integral part of the Federal Government initiative to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal that has resulted to increase in prices of food items in the market, we have recognised the challenges, that is why we come up with this initiative.
“The Federal Capital Territory Administration started the distribution of the palliatives to various groups since last week, the feed back we received is encouraging which is why we are expanding the distribution.
“Under this phase of distribution, we have brought the items closer to the people to ensure direct outreach, therefore an individual or stakeholder is not allowed to divert the palliatives meant for the poor people, let them get it”.
In his remarks, the chairman Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya commended the Minister of FCT for bringing the food items to the door steps of the residents.
He said the palliatives are not for well to do individuals but for the less privileged.
“This palliatives are only for those that are poor or don’t have means of survival, so government officials and appointees should not partake in the sharing, poverty will come upon anyone that hijack the items”
In his submissions, the Esu Bwari, Ibrahim Yaro, said Wike’s approach to the palliatives shows his love for the Abuja people especially Bwari residents.
“Wike is a person that has the love of Abuja people in his heart, his approach shows that he will do more for the people”
Yaro urged the residents to be patient with government, saying the pains from fuel subsidy removal will soon be over.
End.
