In a historic move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given his assent to the Bill that reverts Nigeria to its old national anthem. This announcement was made by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate to commemorate 25 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria.
The Bill, sponsored by House Majority Leader Professor Julius Ihonvbere, aims to encourage Nigerians to act according to the patriotic lyrics contained in the national anthem. Ihonvbere noted that despite singing the current national anthem on numerous occasions, Nigerians have not adhered to its lyrics. He emphasized that the old national anthem, written by Lilian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Benda, is a nostalgic reminder of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The revival of the old national anthem is expected to promote a sense of national identity among Nigerians, evoking national pride and unity. Ihonvbere argued that the old national anthem is an integral part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and should be restored to its former place of honor.
The Bill was passed by the House of Representatives last week and by the Senate yesterday, paving the way for the President’s assent. President Tinubu’s move is seen as a symbolic gesture, joining the joint sitting of the National Assembly in commemoration of the newly assented national anthem.
This development is expected to inspire a sense of national unity and pride among Nigerians, reconnecting them with their rich cultural heritage.
While flagging off the new National Anthem at a joint seating of the National Assembly,President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended the National Assembly for their cooperation for passing The bill into law and further intend that he will soon submit the 2024 supplementary budget.
Tinubu said the National Assembly presents our consciousness and sense of hope without the institution of the National Assembly, Good he will not find a path to the presidency’ he also urge them to continue to collaborate with the executives to build a nation we can call our own as nobody will do it for us.
