Protest: PCRC FCT Command warns against break down of law & order

By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Federal Capital Territory Command has warned that the planned nationwide protests may lead to breakdown of law and order.

The warning is contained in a communique released to the media at the end of the General meeting of the Command on Friday.

The communique signed by the Chairman, Dr. Rufus Ebegba and the Deputy Secretary, Oliver Eriata agreed that citizens have the right to protest but where it becomes violence the right stops.

According to the Command, “based on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appeal to the proponents of the protest to shelve the strike and assuring them of looking into their demands, the youth should shelve the proposed strike and give the president time to address their demands,

“That the proponents of the protest should give government time to look into the demands, even though the Government has its shortcomings,

“That the PCRC as an intelligent group should spearhead sensitization of groups on the need to shelve the protest as the current mood of the nation is not suitable for protest,

It said no PCRC member should be involved in the protest if it holds.

“PCRC members should try and sensitize people and groups on the consequences or aftermath of engaging in a protest that could lead to destruction or vandalisation of property and threat to life.

“PCRC Divisions and Area Commands should hold meetings with stakeholders including religious, professional bodies, trade unions and traditional leaders in respect to the subject.

“That as an appendage of the police, the PCRC members should ensure peace and harmonious coexistence amongst citizens.”
