Unknown gunmen have struck the industrial town of Nnewi, Anambra State again, killing one of the officers while another member of the team sustained serious injuries.
The gunmen who attacked at the police team at Omata junction, Uruagu-Nnewi, also destroyed the operational vehicle used by the police team.
The development caused confusion in the industrial town as there were speculations in section of the market and other parts of the town.
Many people rushed to the scene of the crime immediately after the gun duel between the police and the gunmen.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam(CP) has ordered a manhunt operations on gunmen who perpetrated the attack.
The CP in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Tochukwu Ikenga (SP) said that the police team was attacked on Friday at about 9:20am at a checkpoint, Omata junction, Nnewi Oba road.
“The Operation led of Assistant Commissioner in charge of Nnewi Area Command is already working with the locals in the area to unmask and apprehend the attackers.
“Meanwhile, in ensuing gun duel by the Police Operatives, one of the Police personnel was fatally hit by an explosive thrown at them by the gunmen and the other that is seriously injuried is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
“To this end, police team has taken over the area, further details shall be communicated” SP Ikenga pointed out.
