A civil society group representing Nigeria’s 774 local governments has called on security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the arrest of Bashir Hadejia, who is said to face serious charges including reported gun-running and other transnational crimes.
In a statement issued by the National Coordinator, Mansur Abubakar, the group emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and ensure that the full weight of the law is applied.
Abubakar affirmed, “We are committed to monitoring this case closely until justice is served.”
The statement also highlighted allegations that Hadejia is a close associate of the current Executive Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, and a confidant of General Ali Gusau.
The CSO stressed that no individual, regardless of their position or influence, is above the law, and accountability must prevail.
“Our nation’s security and the trust of our people depend on it,” Abubakar said. “We must ensure that those who breach our national trust face the consequences.”
The group viewed the apprehension of individuals such as Bashir Hadejiya as not only protecting our borders but also underscoring the importance of vigilance in combating increasingly sophisticated networks of crime and terrorism.
The nexus between local and international criminal enterprises calls for a fortified response from all stakeholders to dismantle these dangerous operations.
Hadejia’s alleged involvement in gun-running and smuggling gold from the Central Bank of Libya highlights a dangerous partnership with international criminal networks.
“The criminal activities revealed through Hadejia’s confession pose significant threats to Nigeria and the wider West African region,” Abubakar added.
“These networks undermine national integrity and contribute to terrorism and instability, representing a severe challenge to our sovereignty and peace.”
