Government agency pushes for legislative action on social welfare bill

By Mercy Aikoye

The Idealab Agency, a government-established body, has called for the swift passage of a bill to establish the National Council for Public Assistance to widows, dependent children, and orphans.

At a press conference on Monday, Director General Tyongi Emmanuel Aondoakaa emphasized the importance of the bill in addressing various social issues.

Aondoakaa commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives for sponsoring the bill and engaging with stakeholders to garner support.

He noted that the bill’s provisions align with President’s Renewed Hope Agenda to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2027.

The Director General expressed optimism that the 10th Assembly will prioritize the bill’s passage and transmission to the President for assent.

Aondoakaa highlighted the agency’s objectives, including creating wealth using digital platforms and providing access to grants, scholarships, aid, employment, market access, and loan programs.

The Idealab Agency was established in May 2024 to address challenges faced by smallholder farmers and MSMEs in accessing intervention funds, market access, and employment.

Aondoakaa called on the National Assembly, media, and stakeholders to support the agency in mobilization and awareness creation about the intervention programs, which can benefit millions of Nigerians. ‎
