BTR-1: UNDP tasks stakeholders on transparent data collation

By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has charged stakeholders in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to be consistently transparent in their data collation before sending to the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat, as this is the only way Nigeria will attract interest from international organizations.

Mr. Rasak Nayamuth, UNDP Consultant, gave this admonition at the close of a 3-day data analysis workshop for the preparation of Nigeria’s First Biennial Transparency Report in Lagos.

Nayamuth said: “When you are transparent with your data the European Union, USA, England, Japan, New Zealand will continue to be interested in your reports. If they are not interested in Nigeria, they would not be reading your report, they will not be communicating with the government.

“It is because there is an interest, if not they will not be communicating with anybody, but they will not be moved by your report and if your report is not transparent it won’t attract funding from these countries.

According to the Consultant, in Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) there are policies, programs and measures, but not clearly the introduction.

“For instance okay, I have a project on solar and I need to develop a mini grid, to supply electricity to so many households and so many people, with the benefit that this will bring. Your NDC supposed to cover up to 2030”.

Also, in ensuring that the rate of transparent reporting is maintained, Nayamuth advised the Federal Government to build the capacity of critical stakeholders saying “focusing on the relevant agencies will make it more effective and cost efficient.

“Training university lecturers by organizing courses for them will also be beneficial to the project at hand”.

Nayamuth who revealed that there are tools and templates that have been developed to help the stakeholders get a proper and transparent data.

In his submission, Mr. Bhardowae appealed to stakeholders to come forward with their data for the country to beat December 31, 2024 deadline given by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“My appeal is for those with the data to come forward with them and share with the NCCC so that we have enough information to present to the UNFCCC before deadline” he pleaded.

The Stakeholders’ Consultation and Data Analysis Workshop was organized towards the Implementation of Nigeria’s 1st Biennial Transparency Report and the combined 2nd Biennial Transparency Report and 4th National Communication to the UNFCCC.

It was organized by the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
