A renowned constitutional lawyer, Amobi Nzelu, has charged the newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun, to restore the judiciary to its former glory.

Nzelu, Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers, Abuja emphasized the need for a sanitized judiciary, stating: “The system has degenerated, and it is time to apply the principles of justice, not just the law.”

He praised Kekere-Ekun’s expertise, having appeared before her in Lagos High Court, during Major Mustapha, Abacha, Bamaiyi Shofolaho, among others and expressed confidence in her ability to bring change.

Nzelu stressed that appointments to the bench should be based on merit, not connections or influence. “A compromised judiciary is the greatest bane of any nation,” he warned.

Kekere-Ekun, recently confirmed by the Senate, has pledged to address the judiciary’s challenges.
