Sokoto communities’ elders hail Matawalle over massive reduction in banditry

Elders from the Isa, Goronyo and Sabon Birni communities in Sokoto State have commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for his significant role in reducing violence occasioned by banditry and restoring security in the region.

Their commendation follows the minister’s recent visits to the Isa, Goronyo, and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas, as part of broader efforts to address the longstanding insecurity in the areas.

According to the group, the killing of notorious bandit leader Halilu Sububu has led to a marked decrease in banditry in Isa Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by Mansur Isa, convener of the elders’ movement, and made available to journalists on Thursday, the elders expressed deep gratitude for the enhanced security, noting that residents can now enjoy peaceful nights for the first time in years.

“The fear and uncertainty that once plagued our lives have diminished, and we are now able to resume our daily activities without the looming threat of insecurity,” Isa said.

He further noted that the sharp decline in attacks has brought a renewed sense of hope and optimism to the people of Isa and its surrounding areas.

The group also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence, calling the decision “wise and timely.”

Additionally, they acknowledged Matawalle’s visits to key areas previously dominated by bandits, such as the Gundumi road in Isa and Sabon Birni, as a critical move in reclaiming peace.

The elders urged the federal government to reestablish a military camp in Kagara, a location they recalled had experienced relative peace due to the camp’s presence in the past. They believe its reinstatement would help consolidate recent security gains.

“Before the current administration, our town and several surrounding communities were under the control of bandits,” Isa added.

“Today, thanks to the leadership of President Tinubu and Minister Matawalle, we can safely return to our farms and live our lives with a renewed sense of peace.”
