A Zamfara-based advocacy group, Zamfara Concerns Citizen, has expressed strong disapproval of Governor Dauda Lawal’s alleged excessive spending on foreign travel, totaling over N2 billion within three months.
The group expressed concerns that these expenses fail to address the pressing needs of Zamfara’s citizens.
In a statement released on Saturday, Musa Muhammed, the group’s convener, voiced frustration with what he termed “unnecessary and extravagant spending” by the Governor Lawal’s administration.
Muhammed expressed alarm over the reported N2 billion travel bill, highlighting the contrast between this spending and the financial struggles of civil servants, pensioners, and residents throughout the state.
“We are shocked and deeply disappointed by recent reports revealing that Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has spent over 2 billion naira on travel expenses alone,” Muhammed stated.
The civic group emphasized the hardships faced by many Zamfara citizens, arguing that the government should prioritize essential needs and address economic challenges like poverty and insecurity rather than luxury expenditures.
Muhammed underscored the need for transparency and called on Governor Lawal to justify the travel spending and explain how it benefits the people of Zamfara.
He urged the administration to redirect resources toward paying salaries, pensions, and implementing programmes that address residents’ welfare, describing these actions as essential for responsible leadership.
“True leadership means putting the needs of the people first, not personal luxury.
“We urge the Governor to reassess his priorities and take decisive steps to support the people of Zamfara, ” Muhammed stated.
