Reps to Donate N704.9m to Vulnerable Nigerians on Dec 31

By Mercy Aikoye

The House of Representatives has set a date to present a significant donation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. On December 31, 2024, the House will present N704.91 million to the President, which was raised by slashing 50% of members’ salaries for six months. This gesture aims to support vulnerable Nigerians who are struggling due to the current economic hardship.

The economic hardship was triggered by the removal of the subsidy on petrol by the President. In response, the House of Representatives resolved to contribute half of their salaries to address the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. This decision was made on July 18, and since then, members have contributed a substantial amount.

According to Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the contributions made by members demonstrate their steadfastness and dedication to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians. Abbas expressed happiness that the House has been able to raise N704,907,578.82 so far.

The donation will be handed over to the President on December 31, 2024, for the exclusive use of vulnerable Nigerians. This gesture is a clear indication of the House of Representatives’ commitment to supporting those in need.

It is worth noting that the removal of the subsidy on petrol has had a significant impact on the economy, leading to increased prices and hardship for many Nigerians. The donation by the House of Representatives is a welcome gesture that aims to alleviate some of the suffering.

The House of Representatives’ decision to donate half of their salaries is a commendable act of solidarity with the Nigerian people. It demonstrates their commitment to supporting those in need and working towards a more equitable society.
