Assault on any police officer is an assault on me, says IGP

From Maurice Okafor, Enugu

The Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday lamented the increasing rate of abuse, insult and jungle justice dished on police officers discharging their noble duties by civilians and categorically warned that the force will react punitively to such deeds, henceforth.

The IGP said such embarrassment is an assault on him as the number one police officer in Nigeria.

Addressing police officers at Police headquarters Enugu,Egbetokun directed supervisory police officers to take commensurate actions against civilians with such attitudes.

His words, “We will not tolerate any assault on our police officers; not to talk of killing police personnel. An assault on any police personnel is criminal and an assault on me, the IGP.

“For 2025, we are not going to take any kind of assault on our personnel and not talk of killing any of them.

“Anywhere there is assault or killing of any policeman, you all must respond commensurately and appropriately. We will not tolerate it anymore,” he said.

The IGP assured that the Federal Government will soon role out improved welfare package for police officers in the country and equipment to enable them live up to the expectations of their duties.

He commended officials of the Enugu Police Command and the Commissioner,CP Kanayo Uzuegbu for their gallantry in combating crime in the state.

However, he stressed there are few bad eggs to be shown the way out.

End.
