Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has pledged his support for initiatives that will boost education in Nigeria. He emphasized the critical role education plays in shaping the country’s future. Kalu made this commitment while receiving a delegation from the University of Calabar, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Obi and Provost Professor Enyong Ubana.
The delegation visited Kalu to inform him about the university’s upcoming 50th anniversary and convocation lecture, and to invite him to be the guest lecturer. Kalu, an alumnus of the University of Calabar, expressed his pride in being associated with the institution, which he credited with instilling virtues of hard work, competition, and patriotism in him.
Kalu acknowledged the significance of education in nation-building and expressed his dedication to supporting initiatives that promote access to quality education. He commended the University of Calabar for its efforts in advancing education and pledged to continue partnering with the institution.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, decorated Kalu as an ambassador of the university, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the nation. Kalu vowed to sustain the legacy and discipline he received from the university, where he is currently pursuing his doctorate in law.
Kalu also announced his plan to sponsor awards for young law students, inspired by the achievements of students from the University of Calabar. He urged the university to participate in the ongoing constitutional review by conducting quality research on issues like state policing.
The Deputy Speaker expressed his gratitude for the recognition and pledged to be part of the university’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university and the legislative arm of government in building a brighter future for Nigeria.
Professor Obi and Professor Ubana praised Kalu for making the country proud through his legislative engagements, describing him as one of the university’s special gifts to the nation.
