Senate calls for review of 2025 NIMC budget

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi, Abuja

The Nigerian Senate has urged a review of the 2025 budget allocation for the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

This call was made by Senator Abdul Ningi – led Senate Committee on NIMC and Population, during the defense of the commission’s 2025 budget allocation.

Senator Ningi questioned the use of an “envelope budget template” for a critical agency like NIMC, which according to him, is responsible for securing the data of over 200 million Nigerians. He therefore emphasized the need for adequate funding to ensure national security, highlighting that the commission’s limited funds in 2024 hindered its operations.

NIMC’s Director General, Engr. Abisoye Coker Odusote, also expressed concerns about the commission’s limited funds, which prevented it from adopting modern technologies essential for its operations. The Senate’s call for a budget review is expected to address these challenges and ensure the commission’s effective operation.
