NSCDC denounces misleading reports on kidnapping, banditry

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi, Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has strongly denied a recent media report alleging that its personnel were involved in kidnapping, banditry, and supply of arms and ammunition. According to a statement by CSC Babawale Afolabi, Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters Abuja, the report is misleading and does not reflect the accuracy of facts.

The NSCDC clarified that the arrests in question were made in October 2022, involving individuals who were then personnel of the Corps but have since been dismissed in 2023. The suspects acted independently and did not represent the NSCDC in any capacity. The recent court proceedings held are part of the ongoing judicial process related to these arrests.

The NSCDC management and high command have implemented various reforms and initiatives aimed at strengthening national security and condemning any acts of sabotage and breach of security. These efforts are conducted in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure public safety and security. NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has zero-tolerance for misconduct, indiscipline, and unpatriotic dealings among personnel.

The NSCDC emphasized that the three individuals arrested have been dismissed and are no longer operatives of the Corps. The organization remains committed to upholding professionalism and ethics in all its actions. In its ongoing efforts to enhance security, the Corps has collaborated with various security agencies through training, joint task forces, and other operations.

The NSCDC urged media outlets to accurately report on the issue and avoid sensationalism and misrepresentation, which can erode public trust and denigrate the image of the Corps. Despite the misleading report, the NSCDC remains committed to safeguarding the nation’s critical assets and infrastructure, protecting lives and property, and serving the public with integrity, discipline, and professional conduct.

In a separate development, the NSCDC has been actively working to combat banditry and kidnapping in various parts of the country. For instance, operatives of the NSCDC arrested a suspected bandit, Umar Ibrahim, in Kano State in October 2024 ¹. The Corps’ efforts to enhance security and protect the public are ongoing, and it remains committed to upholding its values of professionalism, integrity, and discipline.
