Sowore’s cybercrime charges: Afenifere youths, CSO back IGP Egbetokun

By Mercy Aikoye

The Afenifere Youth Coalition and a civil society organization, Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law, have condemned Omoyele Sowore’s attacks on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Sowore, a presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in 2023, has been arraigned over cybercrime allegations against the Nigerian Police Chief.

The Afenifere Youth Coalition described Sowore’s actions as part of a larger agenda to destabilize the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They accused him of building a career out of harassing, defaming, and undermining public officials. The group also noted that Sowore’s penchant for false accusations and digital harassment has finally caught up with him, leading to the 16-count cybercrime charges filed against him.

The Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law praised IGP Egbetokun’s strides in ensuring national security and tackling crime across Nigeria. They commended his patience, professionalism, and adherence to due process in handling Sowore’s defamation case. The group noted that the IGP has brought a new era of professionalism and effectiveness to the Nigeria Police Force, resulting in a marked reduction in violent crimes.

The CSO accused Sowore of being a professional protest organizer, an agent of destabilization, and a mouthpiece for those who wish to keep Nigeria in perpetual crisis. They alleged that he has built his entire career on inciting anarchy, spreading falsehoods, and misleading the public through his biased online platform, Sahara Reporters.

The Afenifere Youth Coalition challenged Sowore to provide evidence of his platform making constructive contributions to governance in Nigeria. They questioned his credibility as a politician, citing his inability to secure even minimal votes during his presidential bid.

The Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law urged the IGP not to lose focus and to continue his noble work in restoring law and order. They reaffirmed their full support for IGP Egbetokun, praising his commitment to justice and democratic principles.

The CSO noted that Sowore’s attacks on the IGP are part of a well-orchestrated distraction campaign aimed at diverting attention from the progress being made in ensuring national security. They accused him of manufacturing controversy, pushing misleading narratives, and attracting international sympathy to further his own interests.

The Afenifere Youth Coalition and the Concerned Citizens for Justice and Rule of Law called on Nigerians not to be fooled by Sowore’s antics, insisting that he is not fighting for the masses but for his own interests.

The groups emphasized that the judiciary must allow the law to take its full course, ensuring that justice is served and that Sowore’s actions do not go unpunished. ‎
