European nations’ oil interests behind killings in Biafraland – Orabueze

The Deputy Prime Minister and Chief of Staff of the United States of Biafra (USB), Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, has attributed the ongoing insecurity and violence in the South-East and Biafraland region of Nigeria to the interest of European nations in the area’s oil resources.

Orabueze made this assertion in a statement posted on her X account on Thursday.

Her remarks come in the wake of Nigeria’s recent agreement on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which aims to transport billions of cubic meters of gas across 4,128 kilometers (2,565 miles) from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria, before linking to Italy via the undersea Mediterranean pipeline, Transmed.

According to Orabueze, the increasing militarization and insecurity in Biafraland stem from the strategic importance of its oil and gas reserves.

She claimed that European nations are keen on securing petroleum exports from the region, leading to persistent conflict.

“Europe’s quest for oil in Biafraland is the major reason for the continued invasion, killings, and occupation of a sovereign state, the United States of Biafra, by Nigeria,” she stated.

She further warned that resistance against external control over the region’s resources would intensify.

“This invasion and occupation will become resisted, and Biafrans must defend themselves and their land. Nigeria is mandated to leave Biafra nation,” she added.

Orabueze’s comments follow a recent report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), which alleged that at least 180 people were killed in the South-East between December 2024 and January 2025 by security forces and non-state actors.

Meanwhile, USB has continued to advocate for the release of two prominent Biafra activists—Simon Ekpa, who was detained by Finnish authorities in November 2024, and Nnamdi Kanu, who was rearrested by the Nigerian government in June 2021.
