Hon. Okey-Joe Pays Tribute to Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Hails His Legacy of Democracy and Justice

The member representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 2, Lagos State, in the House of Representatives, Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, MHR, has extolled the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, describing him as a relentless advocate for democracy, justice, and national unity.

Hon. Okey-joe, in his tribute, noted that Pa Adebanjo’s passing leaves a significant void in the nation’s political landscape. He hailed the elder statesman as a courageous leader who dedicated his life to the principles of true federalism, social justice, and good governance.

“Pa Ayo Adebanjo was more than a politician; he was a nationalist, a freedom fighter, and a defender of democracy. His unwavering commitment to the ideals of federalism, free education, and social welfare set him apart as one of Nigeria’s most remarkable leaders,” Okey-Joe stated.

Born on April 10, 1928, in Ijebu Ogbu Oke, Ogun State, Pa Adebanjo began his political journey in 1943 as a Zikist, aligning with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, before joining the Action Group under Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1951. Throughout his career, he remained devoted to Awoism, championing policies that prioritised the welfare of the common man.

Hon. Okey-Joe highlighted Pa Adebanjo’s role in Nigeria’s struggle for independence, his fearless opposition to military rule, and his leadership within the Afenifere sociopolitical group. He praised the late elder statesman for his advocacy during the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) movement, which played a critical role in Nigeria’s return to democracy.

“His life was a testament to courage and integrity. He stood firm even in the face of intimidation and repression, always speaking truth to power. His advocacy for restructuring and true federalism remains relevant to our national discourse today,” Onuakalusi added.

The lawmaker acknowledged that Pa Adebanjo’s influence extended beyond politics, as he served as a mentor to many young leaders and activists. His commitment to Nigeria’s unity and democratic principles earned him national and international recognition, including the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).

As Nigeria mourns the loss of a statesman, Hon. Onuakalusi called on leaders across the country to emulate Pa Adebanjo’s values of service, integrity, and patriotism.

“Pa Adebanjo may have left us physically, but his ideals will live on. His life’s work remains a guiding light for all who seek a better Nigeria. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
