By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi Abuja

The Ministry of Interior has responded to recent allegations regarding the administration of expatriate quotas in the oil sector, which were broadcast on national TV, even as it assured the public that these allegations are being taken seriously and proactive steps have been taken to address the concerns.

This was contained in a press statement signed and .ade available to media houses on Monday, by Dr Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry

In line with its commitment to transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency, the Ministry had earlier announced a review of the approving authority for Expatriate Quota (EQ) and Citizenship applications. This review, announced in a circular dated February 12, 2025, has led to a significant shift in the administration of expatriate quotas, with all approvals now being domiciled with the Minister and the Permanent Secretary.

The Minister, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the administration of expatriate quotas is fair, transparent, and in the best interests of Nigerians. To achieve this, the Ministry has set up a review committee consisting of the Ministry of Interior, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the organized private sector under the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

The committee is tasked with examining the current expatriate quota policy and making recommendations for improvement where necessary. This move demonstrates the Ministry’s dedication to working with stakeholders to address concerns and make improvements to policies and procedures towards the overall growth and development of Nigeria.

In addition to these efforts, the Ministry has also outlined the requirements and guidelines for expatriate quota applications, renewals, and amendments. These guidelines, available on the eCITIBIZ portal, provide clarity on the documentation and procedures required for companies to engage expatriates in Nigeria.

The Ministry’s proactive approach to addressing these allegations and its commitment to transparency and accountability demonstrate its dedication to ensuring that the administration of expatriate quotas serves the best interests of Nigerians.
