NCoS mourns officer killed in Kogi Custodial Centre escape Incident

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced the tragic demise of Senior Correctional Assistant (SCA) Shuaibu King David, who bravely lost his life during an escape incident at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, on March 24, 2025, according to a press statement from Umar Abubakar,

SCA Shuaibu King David’s courageous sacrifice reflects his unwavering dedication to service and national security. He stood his ground in an effort to prevent the escape of inmates and protect the integrity of the custodial centre.

The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the late personnel. “His service and ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered and honoured,” he said.

The Nigerian Correctional Service is working closely with relevant security agencies and communities to recapture the escaped inmates. The NCoS is statutorily responsible for taking into lawful custody those duly certified to be so kept by courts of competent jurisdiction.

The incident highlights the risks and challenges faced by correctional officers in Nigeria. The Nigerian Correctional Service Portal provides information on the agency’s activities, including its efforts to reform and rehabilitate inmates.
