The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester Nwakuche as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). This confirmation comes after the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report on Nwakuche’s screening.

According to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the committee found Nwakuche to be a nominee with impeccable character, full of exposure, experience, intellectual energy, and drive, making him worthy of the appointment. Nwakuche has been involved in several command positions and has benefited from training and re-training as an officer of the NCoS.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, charged Nwakuche with the responsibility of tackling jailbreaks across the country, emphasizing the critical nature of his appointment. Akpabio remarked, “To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks” ¹.

Nwakuche’s confirmation was sequel to President Bola Tinubu’s submission of his nomination for Senate approval. In his letter, read during plenary by Akpabio, the President emphasized Nwakuche’s qualifications and the urgency of the appointment ¹.

In another development, the Senate also confirmed the appointment of Professor Melvin Ayogu as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board of Directors ¹.
