The Arewa Youth Development Association (AYDA) has praised the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) for hosting a two-day Interactive Programme on Government-Citizen Engagement, describing it as a key milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to the group, the initiative marks an important advancement in creating stronger communication channels between citizens and government, which is essential to deepening democracy across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, AYDA Chairman, Jibrin Tanimu, said the programme has provided a much-needed avenue for citizens to interact directly with leaders, especially in Northern Nigeria, where inclusive political engagement has been a long-standing concern.
He noted, “As we reflect on the importance of this event, we recognize that it has provided a vital platform for citizens to engage directly with their leaders, facilitating a discourse that is essential for national development.
“The interactive programme has not only reinforced the significance of transparency and accountability in governance but has also served as a beacon of hope for the people of Northern Nigeria, who have long yearned for a more inclusive and participatory political landscape.”
Tanimu also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its security initiatives in the North, stressing that the improvements have been felt by communities.
He stated, “At this juncture, we are particularly pleased to highlight the commendable efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in addressing the pressing security concerns that have plagued our region.
“The robust measures taken to enhance security have not gone unnoticed, and this event has provided an opportunity for citizens to acknowledge the ample promises fulfilled by the President.
“The tangible improvements in safety and security are a testament to the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the North, and we are grateful for the proactive steps taken to restore peace and stability in our communities.”*
AYDA further used the forum to address misconceptions about the government’s engagement with the North.
Tanimu added, “Moreover, the programme has effectively illuminated the fallacies propagated by certain unscrupulous political leaders who have sought to undermine the progress made under President Tinubu’s leadership.
“These individuals have falsely claimed that the North has been neglected, a narrative that this interactive session has decisively challenged. By facilitating constructive dialogue among various stakeholders, the event has dispelled misinformation and misconceptions surrounding government policies and actions, thereby empowering citizens with accurate information.”
The association also drew a connection between this year’s programme and the 2022 interactive session with presidential candidates, noting that the current discussions offer a timely review of commitments made for Northern Nigeria’s development.
Tanimu continued, “The interactive programme builds upon the fruitful discussions held during the session with presidential candidates in October 2022, where pivotal commitments were made for the development of Northern Nigeria.
“It is encouraging to see that this follow-up event aims to evaluate the progress of President Tinubu’s administration in fulfilling these pledges two years into its tenure.
“Such evaluations are crucial, as they not only hold leaders accountable but also ensure that the voices of the citizens are heard and considered in the decision-making processes that affect their lives.”
AYDA reaffirmed its belief in continuous citizen-government dialogue, stressing that such engagement is vital for policy-making that reflects the people’s needs.
Tanimu urged Nigerians to take part in such programmes, saying, “The Arewa Youth Development Association firmly believes that fostering government-citizen engagement is imperative for national development. It is through these dialogues that we can bridge the gap between the government and the governed, ensuring that policies are reflective of the needs and aspirations of the people.”
AYDA applauded the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation for its consistent dedication to promoting dialogue and inclusivity, even as it expressed delight over the initiative.
“We commend the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation for its unwavering commitment to enhancing government-citizen engagement and for facilitating this transformative programme.
“The Arewa Youth Development Association stands ready to support and collaborate with all stakeholders in the pursuit of a prosperous and secure Northern Nigeria. Together, let us continue to build a nation where every citizen’s voice is valued, and where the promise of democracy is realized for all,” Tanimu added.
