A one-day workshop organized by the Senate Press Corps (SPC) on “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges, and Responsibilities” culminated in a communique with key resolutions. The workshop, held at the National Assembly Library in Abuja on September 10, 2025, aimed to improve the quality of legislative reporting.

Participants resolved to strengthen collaboration between the SPC and the legislature to ensure accurate information dissemination and promote accountability, establish quarterly training sessions and workshops for SPC members in partnership with relevant institutions, encourage the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) to develop training courses for parliamentary reporters.

The workshop also highlighted the need for journalists to deepen their knowledge of parliamentary procedure to provide accurate and informed reporting. This, they noted, would help address the tendency of the media to prioritize sensational news over substantive coverage of legislative measures.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the Senate Press Corps, Taiye Odewale, expressed his honor and privilege in hosting the one-day workshop themed “Parliamentary Reporting: Issues, Challenges, and Responsibilities.” He welcomed participants on behalf of the 96 members of the SPC, highlighting the importance of the occasion in enhancing their knowledge and capacity to report objectively on the National Assembly’s activities.

The workshop featured a stellar lineup of resource persons, including Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Senator (Dr.) Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Senator Ita Solomon Enang, and Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman. With their diverse expertise and experience, Odewale expressed confidence that participants would gain valuable insights into parliamentary reporting, ultimately improving their professional standards and contributing to better governance in Nigeria.
