FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Protest erupts in Abuja

By Daniel Tyokua

A protest demanding the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has begun in Abuja, sparking fear across the Federal Capital Territory.

Security operatives in the early hours of Monday, fired tear gas at protesters, causing difficulties for commuters and residents.

The demonstration, coordinated by human rights activist and 2023 African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, was disrupted early on, with police officers dispersing participants and passersby.

Security personnel have mounted heavy checkpoints, and soldiers, police, and DSS operatives are deployed at key locations, including the Three Arms Zone and Eagle Square.

The AUTHORITY report that Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021. He is facing a seven-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony.

The IPOB leader was first arrested in 2015, granted bail in 2017, and fled after a military invasion of his home in Abia State.

Despite several court rulings ordering his release, the Federal Government has yet to comply, a situation that continues to stir public outrage and renewed agitation.
